Fitness experts weigh in on New Year's workout resolutions
A Cumberland County Planet Fitness encourages people to start the New Year with a new workout routine.
CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. — As 2026 approaches, some people are resolving to be healthier and more physically active.
According to a survey by Talker Research, 45% of people polled said their 2026 goal is getting more exercise and 41% said they want to improve overall physical health.
Staff at Planet Fitness Mechanicsburg, part of National Fitness Partners, say some people struggle to start and maintain a workout routine.
“I would think bringing a gym buddy to help you work out, also tracking your progress is good,” said Timothy Armolt.
Armolt is the gym’s General Manager and has experience helping people develop a plan that’s right for them.
A plan sometimes begins with measuring a person’s base strength and figuring out which machines will provide the best results.
“It’s a plate loaded machine, it’s good to work your upper pec and also some of your delts,” Armolt explained.
While people might make and start a workout plan, not everyone will follow through with it.
Armolt has a few suggestions on how to stay motivated.
“I like to watch my growth and my progress over the years, it is a long-term game, and it is very good to just track your progress and watch your body grow,” Armolt said.
Some machines at the gym have a QR code for people to scan during their workout.
“On our Planet Fitness Mobile App, you can track your progress on there, it also has tutorials on how to do the exercises, and also gameplan your workout,” Armolt said.
Armolt and his team encourage members to pace themselves while working out to avoid injury or unnecessary strain.
Stretching, resting, and breathing can help lower the risk of overexertion and give people the chance to progress.
“I’ve seen so many people have a wonderful fitness journey at Planet Fitness; one of the biggest is I’ve seen people grow from 100 to 200, now in here benching 300 and it’s really awesome,” Armolt said.
Memberships are available at the gym year-round and can be obtained in-person or online.
The gym is typically open 24 hours a day, although the space will be closed from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. on from New Years Eve to New Years.
